Colour Connect is a puzzle game where you proceed to the next levels by matching together balls of the same color. I wouldn’t call it a totally new concept in the realm of puzzle games, but at least it tries.

So you match up balls of the same color by clicking on them. Simple, right? No, it’s never that simple. The farther you get, the more balls and more colors you have to deal with. What starts off as a three balls and two colors turns into twenty balls and eight colors. Also, one ball can have 1-4 different colors on it. You’re timed for each level, and you have the option to restart the level or undo your last moves. I think the problem with this game though is it just has limited potential. Once you hit level 8-10 there gets to be too many balls to be able to think through logically. You kind of have to start taking educated guesses, hoping when you whittle the selection down you’ll be able to finish it off. And of course it doesn’t get any easier from there to level 20, so the levels just start to blend together. As you progress the balls will also start doing things like spinning or fading in and out, although I never found this to be much of a distracter.

The overall presentation is lacking in this game. The balls look ok in their multicolor and pattern glory, but there’s no backgrounds at all, just black. No music tracks either, just a couple of sound effects here and there. At least some sort of background pictures would have made the levels more interesting.

There are 20 levels to play through, and what’s nice is that each level is based on criteria, not a physical layout. For example, level four would be defined as having x amount of colors, split x amount of ways with x amount of balls. Meaning that each time you play the level you get the same ‘puzzle,’ just mixed up differently. You can jump straight to level 20 if you like but I think that defeats the point.

Colour Connect has high scores but I’m not sure how they work. When I visited the high score page no one was on it, and the only criteria was ‘people who have beaten the game.’ Seeing as how you can just start at level 20 and beat it, I’m guessing they can’t rank you by time. Also, you can play in a ‘timed’ mode where the game is the same, only each level has a time limit. A nice touch, but doesn’t really add enough to the game. It’s a decent idea, just needs some more work.
