Draw-A-Game

Another one needing some polish

Draw-A-Game, while claiming to be incredibly new and unique, isn’t quite so. It also lacks a certain amount of polish. Regardless it should still grab your attention for a bit.

In DaG the goal is to climb higher and higher by drawing platforms for your character jump on. You collect coins as you proceed, while being chased by a spikey ball. Get hit by the ball too much and it’s game over, and you can submit your coin score for the leaderboards. Move with the arrow keys and draw with the mouse. The control setup would be fine except for the fact that you have to use spacebar to erase lines below you. Why do you have to erase them? Because after so long the game will start to slow down. This functionality should have been implemented in the game to run in the background without you actually having to do it. Also, if you could move with the WASD keys it wouldn’t be a big deal, but reaching from the arrow keys to the space bar is a little annoying.

The graphics are ok but lack coherency in my opinion. You’ve got a spikey ball, a main character modeled after Krinkel’s madness combat, yellow coins, and an empty blue sky. I dunno, just an odd contrast if you ask me. No sfx (not that there really needs to be) but you get your choice of three music tracks: Opera, death metal, or synth. Might as well make the music as varied as the graphics eh?

DaG does feature a bonus drawing mode, which is a just an extension of the main game’s drawing tool. Can’t knock it for being there, but I doubt anyone is going to have fun with it. DaG is a decent game in its own right, but ultimately falls into the mediocre category. Fun to play for a couple minutes, and if you’re really hooked you can try out for the high-scores.
