Counting to ten was never this satisfactory

Plupon is an interesting puzzle game where all you have to do is count to ten. Well, you have to do more than that, but that’s the core element.

The object of Plupon is to continually add bubbles together to form the number ten, or at least add them together to keep them from falling off the screen and get used again. Downside for first-time players: the game is in Japanese. That means the in-game instructions don’t help unless you read Japanese. I played it on Addictinggames, which told me about the adding to ten part, but didn’t say that I could add other bubbles together as well. That’s where a huge amount of quick-thinking comes in. Here’s the deal. Let’s say there are three bubbles on the screen- a 7, a 3, and a 4. You can’t add just two of them together. If you let all three of them pass, you’ll get fourteen points deducted from your life. Add all three together however, and you’ll only get four points deducted off (14-10). To add another element, any set of bubbles that add to ten leave a ‘0’ bubble behind. 0 bubbles don’t count against you for passing, but they can be used to add larger numbers together (for example, 5, 5 and 0). Tricky huh?

The graphics are stylish for a simple game. Smooth effects and a nice color scheme can go a long way. Combining bubbles produces a slick ‘snap together’ effect. If you hold the mouse over a bubble to select it (causing it to stop moving) other bubbles will slowly curve down and around it. A cool extra that is completely unnecessary. The sound effects are minimal, and the chimes can get annoying sometimes, but it’s nothing constant.

I’ve never had such a challenge counting to ten before. Honestly, I was running into trouble already at level 3. It’s really just the amount of options you have that make this game so difficult at times. There’s also the randomness factor, as you would expect. At the beginning of the level I had four balls falling on me- all between 5-9. Not much you can do to avoid it. Barring that though, this game provides quite a challenge.
