Flames of Fury

Hodge-podge graphics, some tedium |

Flames of Fury borrows from several genres to create a unique Flash game formula. In theory, the formula made for a great idea, but something went wrong during the execution. I'll tell you exactly what, and give you a few reasons why the game might still be worth your time. If you're really... really bored.
The first thing that stuck out for me about Flames of Fury were the indecisive graphics. A supposed selling point of the game, the graphics were modeled and rendered in 3D. So they're attractive in their own right, but throw them into an incredibly 2-dimensional game, and any effectiveness is lost. Nothing really fits together, and you're always very aware that you're navigating through several bitmaps that entered Flash as a finished product. Still, they're more detailed than most games, so perhaps not every gamer would have a problem with this graphics choice.
As I mentioned earlier, the gameplay formula behind Flames of Fury sounds great on paper. You command a dragon who must wipe out enemy armies while collecting resources to upgrade and produce deadlier weapons. However, these resources are so limited, and can only be carried in such small quantities at once, that this part of the process becomes a constant nuissance. That you can run out of projectiles altogether is a poor choice on the creator's part, especially when you find your nest under attack with no means of dispatching the attackers. Other strange choices include enemy units that can repair buildings even after they've been blown to smithereens with no trace left behind. Combine this with a blocky world and poor collision detection, and the gameplay leaves something to be desired.
The audio was sufficient. Nothing really felt themely, but all the sounds that really needed to be there were. Much more appropriately chosen were the menu and interface, which actually felt like they should be in a game about a dragon. Still not much to write home about.
So while there's little I can say to advocate Flames of Fury, the RPG elements, weapon variety and game length give it some worth. I can't find anything about the game to call addictive or catchy, though, so I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone but a hardcore Flash gamer.
