Hapland is a unique puzzle game where you have a large area to work with, a task to accomplish, and all kinds of objects and people to experiment with. The goal here is to light two torches and open a portal. The game offers you the hints of clicking on things more than once, paying attention to the walls, and that things require timing. That’s all you’ll get though. From there it’s up to you to start clicking on things and seeing what all events you can make happen.

The great thing about Hapland is that sometimes it even encourages you when you’re on the wrong track. You could do something the wrong way but it will still produce one of the results you need, leaving you to think you’ve gotten somewhere. No, you haven’t. After you play with the game long enough you’ll kind of see what you need to do, it’s just a matter of doing that stuff in the right order and manner. When it comes down to it everything you need to do is pretty logical (logical for a cartoon world at least) and once you figure it out you can run through the game in about a minute, but that’s not the point. I spent a solid hour or better killing innocent stick figures before lighting those damn torches correctly.

Graphics are a little rough but they have a nice detailed style to them. Many of the objects in the game have animations to them as well. The characters are stick figures, but I think they fit the game perfectly. No music, and while there are sounds accompanying the animations there could have been a few more. You’ll be more concerned with figuring out what to do though anyway.

The puzzle aspect of Hapland is what matters, and it’s executed great. It’s not linear and doesn’t hold your hand. Beating the game is pure deduction on your part. Every possible action you take results in another, and there’s not always a definitive answer as to if that action was good or bad. It might frustrate some because of the not-so-obvious solutions, but that’s just part of the game. Hapland is a great start to a puzzle series.
