FOG Mini-Pool

Sub-par pool variant

FOG mini-pool, like many other flash pool games, takes the concept of pool and turns it into a mini-game with custom rules. The idea behind FOG mini-pool isn’t bad but its execution could have used a lot of work.

In this pool variant you have to pocket all balls on the screen before time runs out. To complicate things you have one pink ball that must be knocked in in a shorter amount of time each level. My main problem with this game though is that you can’t adjust the power of any of your shots. Pretty much all you do is click where you want the ball to go, and hope it has the amount of power that you wanted. Separating a cluster of balls can be annoying because there’s simply not enough force behind the hit to scatter them. I can understand trying to simplify gameplay but power adjustment is a given in any pool game.

Another odd thing is that you can shoot the cue ball as soon as it stops moving, regardless if the other balls are moving or not. This means you could shoot the ball, go to line up your next shot, but then get interrupted by a ball that is still moving from the first shot. I’m not sure if this was intended or not, but it looks sloppy. The game plays decently for a few levels but then in level four you are given a pink ball with a one second timer. Which means if you don’t pocket it on your first shot, it’s game over. And there’s no continues, so you’re right back at level 1.

Graphics are ok but whoever did them should realize that the flash gradient tool isn’t the answer for everything. A little bit of texture, extra detail, or shading could have went a long way. As usual the only thing that changes between levels is the ball formation and time, where even some color changes here and there could have added some variety. No music, and the only sounds you’ll be treated to are a ‘pop’ sound when you hit the ball, a crowd cheer when you pocket a pink ball, and the sound of a golf ball sinking in a cup when you pocket a regular ball. Golf ball, pool ball, same thing right?

What is an already flawed game is crippled by the ‘challenge’ thrown at you in level four. So unless you get lucky or just really enjoy playing levels over and over again I suggest you look for a better pool game.
