String Avoider takes advantage of some complex inverse kinematics code to replicate the physics of a string being dragged along the ground. You have to drag your string through obstacle-filled areas making sure it never touches the wall. It’s kind of like the games where you have to move your mouse though a maze, except now you have to keep track of a large area behind the mouse as you do it.

All levels in String Avoider are comprised of a start and end point, with plenty of tricky maneuvers in between. Some levels offer a scissors icon- navigating to it will cut your string shorter and make the level easier to beat. You can also opt to press ‘s’ during the level to cut it instantly, but doing so will take a life. It still might be the best option though, instead of wasting three lives to get past one part.

String Avoider gets tedious, and fast. You’d better get used to pushing your string up as close to the wall as possible when you move it around. Also get used to snagging your string when you move around tight corners, because it’s going to happen a lot. There’s a cool option to make your own levels, but unfortunately you can’t share them with others. Since there’s no option to quit in the middle of a level that means if you make a level with no start/end point the game is stuck there until you reload. Not a major deal but returning to the menu from the game should be a given.

Graphics are clean and have some style to them, but you can only get so awesome when your game consists of a black string making its way through black boxes. Music is casual, probably the best choice to offset some of the tedium. There’s 26 levels in all here, and you should feel pretty accomplished if you can get through all of them. That’s the only way you can play for high scores too. I really like the concept here, but I just wish it was a little more balanced toward fun than challenge.
