A refreshing take on the defense game genre

One Flash game genre that is becoming all too familiar is the defense game. We've all played the 360 mouse type defense game, the single click defense game, and many others with little to no difference than their predecessors. Until now. Defend Atlantis by the Super Flash Bros. puts a refreshingly new twist on the turret controlled mouse based defense game that makes it stand out amongst the crowed.

Although this game has a few other deviations from the common defense game, its main one is its bubble-based shooting method. Instead of the conventional point and click, this game adds a whole additional element to the shooting process. In order to eliminate an enemy you must first circle it in a bubble. This factor is fun because it makes killing enemies a much less "automatic" process and turns it into a highly interactive one that needs to be used rapidly if you're going to stay alive.

Along with the alternate firing method, the game also contains a number of cool features that give it a lot of replay value. The game is level based, where in between each level you receive a new type of ammo. In the beginning of the game you use regular bubbles, but one such ammo addition are "metal" bubbles. You need to use metal bubbles to trap enemies that have spikes, so each weapon comes with an addition enemy thread and something to use it for.

The difficulty of the game is just right. Enemies seem to always be coming at a speed where if you circle accurately you can beat them. Additionally, switching bubble types adds another challenge to the game play where you'll find yourself rapidly using the number keys or arrow keys to select the bubble type you need to use to eliminate a specific enemy.

One of the less important aspects of the game I found interesting was the instruction method. Everything from the initial game play to additional weapons are clearly explained leaving the player well informed of how to do everything.

Overall, this game has good graphics, unique twists on your average defense game, and very solid game play. It also has a free play mode for some added replay value.
