Tetrollapse

Didn't I play this 20 years ago? |

Tetrollapse makes no attempt to hide the fact that it’s a Tetris clone. And by Tetris clone, I mean clone. This is pretty much a carbon copy of 1985’s Tetris with some better graphics. That’s cool if you really like Tetris, but even new Tetris games attempt to be different in some way.
What gets me about Tetrollapse is that this is the ‘light’ version. Whenever pausing the game or dying, Tetrollapse made sure to remind me that I could download the ‘advanced’ version. I take it that ‘advanced’ just means more levels. 60 in all even! That almost compares to the original Tetris’ infinite. Although when I clicked the download link nothing happened, and when I searched the site I didn’t see any mention of Tetrollapse. I guess it didn’t make enough money for them…
Anyway, back to the game. I wouldn’t be so harsh on this if they weren’t trying to market it as a game where you can pay for full content. This game does not feature one single thing beyond the NES original. No shadow piece, no instant drops, no extended preview, no hold piece, no additional modes, nothing. That doesn’t exactly make me want to spring for the full version any time soon. The only thing this game has going for it is that each level places pre-existing pieces on the screen that you have to clear to progress. If you have to clone Tetris then at least try to include some of the newer features like instant drop. Or god forbid, add your own original features. What is here, however, plays nice. I didn’t find any glitches, and all the pieces fit together the way they should. Rotating the pieces wasn't as responsive as I would have liked but that might just be a problem with flash, not the game itself. I was a little disappointed that clearing a tetris didn’t produce any kind of special effect, but what are you gonna do.
Graphics? Decent. The backgrounds and presentation are nice but nothing special. The game consists of five different sound effects and no music. The sound effects are ok, but the sound that is played every time you move a piece left or right gets really annoying. You can turn them off, but I would have preferred having at least some kind of background music to accompany the game. If you’re just looking for some simple Tetris action and nothing more, then this game is right up your alley.
