Can You Escape the Submachine? |

Mateusz Skutnik has created a point and click puzzle world that continues to satisfy fans. The latest installment due out in March of 2007 will be the fifth in the series. Most of us were introduced to the Submachine in Submachine_1: the basement.
The graphics are simple and unassuming without being crude. The game begins in a room with three exits. Two to the sides and a ladder up one level. Start exploring and clicking on everything to see what it does. The goal of the game, to collect four panels, becomes evident fairly early on. As you progress, you pick up objects, assemble clues and see what patterns emerge. There's no real wrong way to go about solving all the puzzles, but if you do get interminably stuck, the [R] button will reset the game. The music is very atmospheric and appropriate to the feel of the game. It is unintrusive, but can be turned off if so desired. There are a few sound effects, but they aren't totally necessary to beat the game.
This is one of the best flash based point and click games I have ever played. Skutnik has developed the 'story' within the game in the subsequent features and also a prequel of sorts. Even if you don't care about the story, the puzzles are challenging enough to while away a good chunk of time without being so frustrating that you want to tear your hair out. Fans of games like Ex Mortis and The Crimson Room will love Submachine.
